CONCORD — There was a synergy of healthful living practices as local city officials and chefs faced off during this year’s eighth annual mayoral cook-off at Todos Santos Plaza, surrounded by farmers market purveyors and youth demonstrating a commitment to fitness.
And, the bounty of ingredients for the competition arrived solely from locally sourced farms, including eggs, flank steak, tomatoes on the vine, multicolored peppers, yellow wax beans, squash varieties, and golden pluots.
“It goes to show we have a lot of agricultural diversity in our backyard,” says cook-off judge Chad Godoy, agricultural commissioner for Contra Costa County, “and that goes a long way to ensure you can keep an agricultural economy going … Not every farmer is corporate. These are small farmers that are part of your community.”
